Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
