Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
